This is episode two of a four-part series covering my first year of full-time camping in 2021. Episode one covered the backstory of how that became possible. In this episode, I cover the behind the scenes of filming and editing full-time. There are chapters in the playback bar as usual if you want to pick and choose parts.
*Episodes 3 and 4* (for fall and winter) will be released throughout the year and they’ll cover the behind the scenes of what it takes to be able to be able to do this full-time including:
-the youtube and finances side of things for fall
-a variety of frequently asked questions we get in the comments for the final episode
I quit my job for a year of wilderness camping - summer

It seems like Nipigon the great, deemed you both worthy, and put on a spectacular show for you while you were there. Thank you for sharing, in great detail, the amazing journey. Just want to say that this series has so far been amazing! Also as a side note your vlogging, editing, voice over, music selection, jump cuts, slow motion, time lapse, mico/wildlife filming, drone footage, commentary and educational content is by far the best of any channel I’ve seen. I absolutely love what you are doing and cannot tell you how refreshing and wonderful it is to watch your journey. I think you have all the right mindsets and direction to make a huge positive impact on the industry and world. Keep it up, and keep doing what you’re doing! You are an inspiration to so many and I always look forward to your next project/video. Sending love and appreciation from wyoming.

    Hey Jon, just into part two a ways and deeply admiring your work as always. But there was a big WOW moment for me on a personal level. It was so quick I had to rewind to confirm it…almost missed it. At 49:39 you show a collection of photos taken with your macro lens. Bottom right photo…that sumac owl is my family’s work. They were a signature creation of my uncle Wilmer Nadjiwon starting at least 50 years ago, carried on by his sons Francis and Marshall, and they can be found in collections all over the world. Marshall was the last surviving one to be creating them and he was concerned about who would carry it on. I expressed an interest in picking it up and spent some time with him in his shop watching him do them. He died unexpectedly a couple of years ago, long before I could learn the craft. Was going to be a challenge anyhow as I’m a visual artist (as you might recall), not a carver. Anyway, the sumac owls will be no more, so keep that one forever, if you still have it. Curious, what is the first initial on the bottom of it? That’ll tell us which of his boys carved it. And if it’s a “W” for Wilmer, then you have absolute gold there. Miigwech for that wonderful surprise!

    • @LostLakes

      Hey Mark, that's super interesting...what a coincidence. Wish I could tell you more but that was about 15 years ago at my friend's cottage (the MacGillivrays) on Pike Bay off the Georgian Bay Peninsula

      @@LostLakes Ha, fair enough! And the geography makes sense as Wilmer and his family, and myself are all members of the Chippewas of Nawash and live here on the Saugeen (Bruce) Peninsula. I'm about 15 minutes from Pike Bay and go there often to take in the sunsets over lake Huron.

    John, do you have any tips or recommendations for stopping water from running down the suspension straps and getting the hammock wet? Thanks

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes 2 години тому

      Yep, the main one being to install the metal buckle on the suspension straps seated on the BOTTOM of the square slot it goes into at the ends of the hammock, not on top. I noticed one time I was getting really bad runoff on one side of the hammock (torrential rain) and by chance I had installed the metal piece under the slot on the dry side. The water should run down the metal piece and drip off there. I also loop the extra suspension strap back around the strap going to the tree...this tidies up the extra slack but also creates extra low points for water to drip off before even reaching the ends of the hammock

    • @MattVanZeeland

    Can I ask why you release 90% of the fish you catch? Is it not cruel to put the fish through that torture for no reason? I understand if you need the food to kill the fish, but I don't understand torturing a creature just for your pleasure or an adrenalin rush.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes 20 годин тому

      I truly respect your empathy for the fish Ashley, and I share it. But there's a lot to it for me...and it's a long answer. First and foremost, fish handling by most anglers is horrible. Sharing good catch and release practices here stands to benefit way more fish than the suffering I admittedly cause to some. There's zero education on fish handling, no test to get a license, pro anglers don't seem to care whatsoever, and most anglers just don't give it enough thought. Trying to educate on barbless hooks and good fish handling is important to me and I hope I can be a net benefit to fish through education...however I have an ongoing and deepening internal conflict about causing suffering to these living creatures. Second, the ethics of catch and release vs. keeping some to eat are very grey to me; either scenario is simply for pleasure, not survival. Human beings can easily subsist off a vegetarian diet and this is well-proven around the world. But most of us eat meat for the pleasure of it. When one gets a fish to the boat, the act to that point is the same, and at that point you can either let it go or kill it and eat it. What do you think the fish would prefer at that point? Especially if it only has a small piercing from a single barbless hook? Killing it (another thing not done well by most anglers who let it suffocate which takes an excruciatingly long time) for the pleasure of eating it arguably doesn't make the act any better. (The only exception for me is someone who can't afford anything else.) Many other factors to it but those are the biggest for me while I practice a valuable wilderness skill, try to educate on fishing handling, and selectively keep some for a nourishing meal

    Tech Nerd Question: I'm curious about your 100-400mm zoom lens; Sigma or Panasonic? I was under the impression that Panasonic only made a G-Series 100-400, not a Leica L-series to fit the S5 line. I gotta say that the change in image quality from the FZ300 to the S5 & S5II is astounding.

      Glad to hear that! Yep that's right. I got Sigma because Panasonic's full-frame L-mount version isn't out yet, but should be out this year. I may upgrade as the focus motor on the sigma is pretty terrible, at least in working with the S5ii. But it is pretty sharp. In all likelihood, the panasonic version will be at least 2x the cost though

    Inspiring. I find myself in a similar situation then you were in. I am 26 and just started a UA-cam channel about camping, fishing and the outdoors and just uploaded my first video. You are literally living my dream and I aspire to hopefully accomplish something like this. Thanks

    Loved this video. I learned a lot from this as a new angler. Thank you!
